Why did this mask fail?

Review

Video Transcript Hey, everyone. Welcome back to the place we are testing every single mask in the world. Today we're on a mission looking for FDA cleared 510(k) masks. That's the top surgical mask that you can get. Let's open this up and get it in the clamper. Can tell I don't love the spunbond quality of this. So talk about that in a second. Get it clamped good first. Let's let her rip. This is a PFE machine, particulate filtration efficiency machine. We are doing a very similar test to what the FDA would do to clear a mask. Now, quick point, masks are not approved. Masks are not registered. Masks are only cleared. And so that's what we're looking for, an FDA cleared surgical mask.

Let's look at the box here. So we had to reach out to the manufacturer. What we did is we went to the FDA's website. There's only about 100 manufacturers that have a cleared mask. We found them all. And the ones that weren't on Amazon, we reached out to and asked for a sample. So this is claiming to be a level 3 mask. That's a filtration of 98% on a machine just like this. This company's called Supple. I wish their box was a little more supple, but otherwise it seems like a pretty good brand, to be honest. This one is made in China. And we reached out to the [inaudible 00:01:33] Technology Co to get the Supple mask. Obviously it's made for an American or a English speaking market.

The masks come sealed, which is really nice. I'm going to open them up. In the box is the quality certificate. I don't like the quality of spunbond. It's got the Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel there look. And when you see those clouds, you know the spunbond isn't super high quality. But the fold is great and I like the ear loops that they're using. It looks like really high quality. Yeah, that's really good. And I would expect high quality from a manufacturer that bothered to go through the FDA clearance process. It can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. It can take years to go through the clearance process. Let's try this on, do a smell test. Oh, this smells like a Saturday afternoon in the park. Interesting. Very clean, very fresh. I'm going to do the test on here. It's pretty good. It's pretty good.

Now remember, FDA 510 cleared ASTM level 3 mask needs to hit 98% filtration on this machine. Wow, there it is. This is the mask of the day: 99.017. 99.017. Finally. I just tested probably five or 10 FDA cleared masks that weren't even clearing 90%, pun intended. So happy to find a mask that is actually beating the standard. All right, guys, thank you so much for watching. I appreciate your time and attention. If you like mask testing as much as I do, stick around because we are dropping a new test every single day at 10:00 AM. Let's do this. Let's see if these masks can meet our standards and I will catch you on the next test.

Description

The Supple mask passed our particulate filtration efficiency machine test with a score of 99%This white surgical mask is 3-ply and has ear loops instead of head straps or ties.

Mask breathability is determined by airflow resistance, which we measure in pascals. The target for adults should be around 150, and the target for children should be close to 100. The airflow resistance of this mask is 49.

This mask has a very pleasant smell. Its construction and materials are also high quality.

We asked someone to send us this mask for testing. Its country of origin is China. Check out our video review for more details.
